inkdick: september 22 2008 - zunzi’s
Zunzi’s is this great little place in downtown Savannah and for years people have told me to go. No tourists go there, it’s for locals only. The food is great. For the price you pay, you get so much food. I’ve been told these things for years, but for whatever reason, I never went in all of my four years here.
Today I finally went, and geez, I wish I had gone sooner. I had the meatloaf and it was the best meatloaf I ever had in my life. The portion was HUGE, especially for the price (and In must publically thank Amy for treating me, she is awesome). My goal before I leave Savannah is to try everything on the menu at least once. I really can’t believe it took me this long to go there. This was also the first year I went to the Sentient Bean, a local coffee house by the park. The first year I had a picnic at Forsyth Park. The first year for many firsts in this town. All this in my LAST year of school here.
The lesson here is enjoy the place where you live, don’t take it for granted and don’t wait until the last minute to fall in love with your surroundings. I may be in Savannah for another year, maybe two, or maybe I’ll be gone as soon as June, I don’t know yet. The point is, I didn’t trully start to appreciate this place until now, and now I have to play catch up, but I don’t know how long I’ve got here. Always love the place where you live. It is your home, you need to enjoy it.

Dude, at Zunzi’s you gotta have Johnny fix you one of the portobella mushroom subs – it’s punch your mama good. Other cool stuff in the Savannah-area if you haven’t already tried it:
• fish tacos or the burgers at the North Beach Grill by the lighthouse on Tybee – hurry before it starts to get cold
• Angels’s BBQ – loccated in a weird little alley next to that Forest Gump Presbeterian church on Bull street (right in fron tof the board of education buiding) – go for the sauces, the dude makes his own.
• the park in front of Savannah Arts Academy on the weekend – Ardsley Park. Cross Victory and there’s a playground.
• Boniventure Cemetary – take a lunch eat down by the back river
• The roof-top deck at Cafe Loco just as you get on Tybee Island. The first time I saw a completely uniterupted horizon line.
• The beach on Tybee – past the barrier rocks on the North end by the lighthouse. You have to cross the barrier rocks so you can get on private property. The cops patrol the public beach at night, but no the private side. I’ve taken a tent and camped there in the winter. It’s neet to be chilly, yet still hear the ocean waves
• Cheap beer at the Legion
• Drunk sloppy local-yokals and SCAD hipsters mingling it up at Pinkies
• Basil’s on Whitmarsh – best pizza in the area, but who knew? Don’t let the Greek menu fool you.
• The Hideaway – southside bar out close to AASU and the Savannah Mall. Military wives, southsiders (people actually live out that way) and AASU choders. Interesting more as an anthropological study.

I’ve only been to Zunzi’s twice, and both times I didn’t like it. I don’t remember what i had but I just know, I had to gag myself once I finished…and drink a bottle of vodka to forget. Sewer waste taste better, i say…and I HAVE tasted it before!

Man I do miss Zunzi’s. And like you, I didn’t try it until senior year.
There’s a tasty BBQ place on Abercorn near Keys Hall called Sweet Leaf. All of their barbeque is made fresh.
And if ever you have the money, try out Cha Bella on Broad (across the road from Savannah). They pride themselves in serving locally grown organic food. It is damn good, and worth every penny (though it will be a lot of pennies).

i must complete your Sweetwater’s list before I leave Savannah! the challenge is on!
crave away, brett. crave away.
That sucks, tyler, because the stuff I had was BEYOND incredible! We had the meatloaf, the conquistador, and lasagna and all were good. sorry about the sewer water…
I’ve driven by that Sweet Leaf place many times saying “hey, I should try that someday” but never have. But now I HAVE to try it!

Sweet Leaf closed - sadly.
Zunzi’s is wonderful - the SLP is great (esp. if you take it home and add extra stuff to make it a huge pizza- I’d do it at the B&B). Also, the african tea is great too! And the chicken is good… when in doubt - they’ll give you a taste of nearly anything if you are unsure.
Blowin’ Smoke on MLK is supposed to be very good - never made it there while I was in SAV.
The Mansion is over rated - don’t go there, even for a nice meal - it’s just standard hotel restaurant food (though they did give me a free bottle of champagne on Valentines day when I stopped in to get dessert to go - which was great).
