inkdick: october 14 2008 - painting with fire

So tonight Scott Kurtz and Dave Kellett came to SCAD to give a lecture on webcomics. If you’ve been around the web, I most likely don’t have to tell you who these guys are (Scott does PVP and Dave does Sheldon and they both make a LIVING doing webcomics, and they are half the team that created the helpful book How to Make Webcomics). They covered most of the stuff they talk about in their book, but it was still cool/super helpful to hear it in person. And they were both funny as hell and had great banter. Thanks to both of them for coming out our way, it was really awesome of them.

And yes, they told us all that when we start our webcomics, we will suck. Trust me, they weren’t being mean by saying this. It’s true, your stuff will suck and will get better (hopefully) in time the long you do it, but you have to do the suck-stage to get to the good-stage.  So I guess inkdick is in the suck stage. But hey, I’m getting better!

Afterward I got to meet them both in person, that was cool. Sweetwater introduced me to Scott calling me one of the best students at SCAD. Well, I don’t know about that, but fuck, I’ll take the compliment. Anyways, I gave them both a power-pack of all my current minicomics, so I hope they dig them.

I’ve come to the realization today that I’m in a unique position, comicwise. It seems to two growing movements in comics, aka the next big things, are webcomics and self-published/minicomics, and I have my pen dipped in BOTH inkwells. Most people are one or the other it seems, but there’s little old me in the middle. I just hope I can succed in both arenas, and maybe in time unite both sides. Only time will tell…

Once again, a huge thanks to Scott and Dave for coming out to Savannah. Now back to making webcomics…

Dave Kellett’s good. I just discovered them both via you. Although Kurtz is polished, I prefer inkdick to his PVP. I think “about my life” comics is advantaged over concept comics as the former can reflect the richness of topics in life, while the latter often gets stuck in the same formula, with little surprise. The problem is, life comics often lacks stylistic originality, and is over-dependent on the life of the author… I think an author is really on top when he or she can draw fiction and still reflect life, and even create a higher version of life, its indifference and moralities, the paradox of meaning and feeling…

All fiction is based on nonfiction; and vis-a- versa. A talented person is one you can make us think about our own lives based on actual experience. I must say inkdick has taught me much. Therefore, I must say to inkdick not to underestimate your talent. Heck, you have me write my feelings on the internet. Thank you
