inkdick: october 25 2008 - oh, how i love the press

We only went to the gallery show to see Janie’s work, which was good. She was also running printing demos for people. It all caused me to be awfully nostalgic for my printmaking days. My plan at SCAD was to double minor in creative writing and printmaking. But by the time I took my first class, they moved almost all of the classes over to the Atlanta campus, and it would be silly to relocate to Atlanta for a quarter or two just to do a minor. I took my first printmaking class the spring quarter of my junior year. If I had started earlier, like during my sophomore year, I might have been able to do it, but alas.

I would still do printmaking, but I don’t have the tens of thousands of dollars to buy the machines I need and only printmaking students are allowed to use the printmaking studios here. Balls.

printing press machine looks intriguing, especially to me as i never got to use them. perhaps i saw it somewhere, or saw something simpler… magical factory touch of seeing the work place of a particular art. all the tools look mystical, then those who train come to master the magic…

the hipste rheadband, unlike the printing press machine, does not look interesting.

I don’t know if you would care, but there is a way to make a cheap and easy kind of ghetto press with a couple of plumbing bolts (I think?) and a car jack?
I’m not exactly sure how to put it together, but I think my print lab has one in the back of the studio (proff put it together, because he wanted to understand)
but if you ever wanted to take up some again, it’s not that expensive to build. You could probably find some plans online pretty easily.

    … :)

    love the comic
