inkdick: november 07 2008 - big head

Day one of Comix Art Forum. Had a workshop with Jennie Breeden of The Devil’s Panties which dealt with webcomics and running a webcomic. That was super informative and gave me a lot of ideas to use in the future for this site.

Got my portfolio reviewed by Meghan Kinder and Kristian Donaldson and both of those went REALLY well. Meghan digged what I was doing and told me to keep going at it. She’s also based in Portland, Oregon right now, a place I’ve been eyeing and thinking about for a little while as someplace I might want to move to soon, so we chatted about that. The more I talk to people who’ve been there or live there, the more I feel like it’s my kind of town.

Kristian really dug my stuff. At first he had trouble finding anything really wrong with my stuff, but finally said that I need to work on my environments and backgrounds. He’s right, as it’s been something I’ve been struggling with for a long time. He said I have my characters down, those are good, but now I have to start treating my backgrounds like I treat my figures, make them in my style, play with them, go all out, give them life. He said he could see me doing something like Mission Hill someday. He also said he sees my work and thinks that I don’t have to work JUST in comics. I could easily work in animation or something if I wanted to.

So two good reviews that boosted my ego and really just made my day.

Then at the celebration dinner for the 50th episode of the SeqaLab podcast someone made a comment that Burkhalter, and Sweetwater and myself ARE the journal comic scene in Savannah. That was a nice boost. (I personally would argue that Brett is also a large part of the Savannah journal comic scene, but he wasn’t there and I’m not the one who made the comment about it.)

Anyways, I need to make sure I keep my ego in check. On one hand, I want to think I’m awesome. On the other hand, I don’t want to be a jerk. Gotta learn to walk the line, especially since everyday I feel I’m getting closer and closer to reaching pro status in the comic world.

That was me that said the journal comics thing, and I fully agree that Brett is most definitely a part of it hence why I said this is “kinda” like the whole Savannah Journal Comics scene. ;)
