inkdick: november 11 2008 - screenprinting demo

NOTICE: Please read this blog post to know why there will be no new inkdicks posted up for a few days.

So Sweetwater had me come in to teach his Intro to Sequential Art class about the wonders of screenprinting. I am getting better at teaching each time I give it a try. Practice. I’ll soon get the hang of it.

The kids were actually really great. And in their defense, it WAS a little chilly out. For the most part they seemed really interested in the screenpritning process. I hope I got at least one of them hooked on it and hopefully also hooked on minicomics. In order to create a REAL and long-lasting comic scene in Savannah we need to get students into minicomics as freshmen and sophomores, instead of as juniors and seniors. One girl was already talking about doing something like my Boxcar Joe comic in a cool little slipcase. That gives me hope for the future of the Savannah comic scene.

It’s interesting to see the make-up of the youngest sequential class. In a class of about seventeen there were only TWO OR THREE males. This is refreshing, since back in the day of my class it was maybe a 3 to 1 male to female ratio. It’s nice to see that the industry will no longer be such a sausage fest. Soon the industry, both in terms of creators and readership, will be balanced evenly between males and females, the way it should be. The American comic industry really shot themselves in the foot by running a boys only club for over 60 years. Times, they be a changin’.

And no, I didn’t REALLY squirt them, as funny as it may have been to actually do so.

Oh, I added a AddThis button plugin to the site, so all the comic and blog entries will have a little bookmark button at the end. If you enjoy the comic, please do me a solid and every one in a while click it and share the comic through StumbleUpon, Digg, or whatever one you prefer. Spread some inkdick. All the cool kids are doing it.

lol. You should have sprayed Sweetwater instead. At least we weren’t trying to shoot you with a nozzle head, right? (Don’t forget, we still outnumber you.)

I did think your screenprinting demo was better than your minicomics lesson, but that might have been because we were actually doing stuff for the screenprinting.

You SCAD kids amuse me. My girlfriend down there is always complaining that it’s cold out. I’m up in Upper Peninsula of Michigan (a.k.a. Little Canada). Our highs at midday are below your lows at night, and we’ve already got snow here. Next time in high is above 60°, I’m wearing a t-shirt.

You Southerners just don’t understand real cold. XD

But anyway, good comic. I’m a fan of all your work.

I think the mainstream industry still sometimes hides behind its “No Girls Allowed” sign, which is sad because I feel there are only a handful of guy writers who can write realistic female characters. But at least the comics industry has been branching out further than the gaming industry.

I thought you did a good job with the demo. I learned alot from it; I just wish all the supplies weren’t so costly so I could silk screen my covers for my minis, but alas, these things like money issues happen.
I think your mini comic lesson was well done, but you did a better job during the silk screening only because it was more hands on, like Kiri said.

On a side note: Sorry to snap about the amount-of-sleep issue, haha. finals week + car trouble +relationship issues = grumpy. I send you hugs instead of grumbling from now on, promise.
