inkdick: november 26 2008 life, the universe and everything
I won’t get into a rant about why a program called The Universe is on the HISTORY Channel. Ok, maybe a MINI-rant.
SPACE is NOT FUCKING HISTORY! PIRATES, KNIGHTS, AND WORLD WAR II ARE HISTORY!
Ahem…
Anyways, I was watching The Universe on the History Channel and it hit me: The universe in theory could go on forever. And never end. Ever. Yes, there are many theories on the span and shape and size of the universe, but for the sake of argument here, let’s say it just goes on forever and ever. Forever and never stopping. Think about that. Seriously, take a minute to use that little human brain and try to totally comprehend the notion of something going on forever without ever ending.
Go ahead, I’ll wait.
…
Yeah, see? Now you know why I’m freaking out about it. I can’t FULLY comprehend that and you probably can’t either. Our brains just weren’t meant for it.
Want to have an even bigger mind fuck? Try to fully comprehend complete nothingness and non-existence. Yeah.
ALSO: Bonus points for anyone who gets the reference I made with this comic’s title.

Space is history, it’s older than our little twirling dirtball we live on. So there.
Also, It’s a HitchHiker Guide reference, durhay!

In my mind it was always Discovery Channel that covered things like science and dinosaurs and History stuck to only human history. But at least The Universe isn’t as bad as MONSTER HUNTERS being on History.
And you sir won the prize! Nerd-points to you!

i’m too late to say that space is history or to win the nerd prize. :-(
but at least i can still say that even if the universe isn’t infinite, it’s still much bigger than we can comprehend, so it may as well be.

Not only that, but TIME is infinite as well… in BOTH directions.

Well, of course YOU can comprehend it, Isaac. But that is only because you are not human or of this planet. I know your dark secret.
And shit Macarthur, you just BLEW MY MIND!

I so have a beef with The Universe show. Good god if you knew. It’s the most sensationalist space show I think I’ve ever seen. Even more so than Harry Caray’s Space: The Infinite Frontier.
“Think about it: A comet the size of your Pinto could kill everyone you’ve ever cared about. And don’t think it won’t come for YOU next.” And it’s weird when these “scientists” get real giddy discussing doomsday stuff, like it’s Christmas morning or something.
Although, it DID help me understand the B.S. that is parallel universes (it was interesting B.S. at least).

Reminds me of a dream I had. The universe itself has a size and a weight to it. But space is infinite. In my dream, I had found the edge of space, where there was no more light, just this inky mirror like darkness, so slick that you couldn’t even touch it. And in my dream, there was someone on the other side looking at me.
It scared me. o___o;;
