inkdick: december 04 2008 package lost
So I stupidly thought after I got mugged at gun point, “Well, everything has to get better from here on out, right? I mean, God/Karma/whatever kind of owes me after this shitty quarter, right?” Well, I was stupid and wrong.
Now, I’m almost broke. The money I have left in the bank is going towards rent and bills and sometimes food. The job outlook is not so hot and I probably won’t be able to get a job until after the holidays at this point, if I even get that. But it’s Christmas coming up and even though my cash flow is zero I still wanted to get some things for the people that are closest to me who I love very much. Tis’ the season and all that Hallmark Card crap.
I ordered Amy’s and Juozas’ gifts via Amazon. A week goes by and nothing so I check the tracking number. Apparently is was already delivered on the 1st. I never got it. No one in this house got it. So I’m now pissed.
I go to the post office. They say the only thing they can do is wait until my carrier gets back from his run and they would ask him if he mis-scanned it by mistake. If he did deliver it, then it was most likely stolen from our porch and I would then have to file a police report. Now in the past they have never left packages on the porch, they always left a notice for pickup. But lately our carrier has been fucking up. Last week a package came and he failed to leave a notice telling me I had to go to the post office to pick it up. Thankfully I had the tracking number to look it up. We’ve also gotten a new pieces of mail from our neighbors this past week in our mailbox, and who knows if we got all of our mail? So fuck the United States Postal System.
Part of me wants to get a P.O. box so this shit won’t happen again, but after this I don’t want to give the fucktards at the post office my money.
More than likely knowing my luck they won’t find my package, and claim that it was stolen or whatever they have to say to cover their own asses. So I just threw away almost forty dollars I couldn’t afford to throw away because I wanted to do something nice for my friends. And I don’t know if I’ll be able to get some money together to replace their lost gifts. I am so sick of getting shit on by life. The past few months have been utter shit. I really don’t know what I did to be shit on like this. I mean, I try to be a good person, but I guess that’s not good enough.
I really can’t take much more of this. If yet another super horrible thing happens to me in the near future…I’m just going to lose it. I am so fucking sick of this. I really am.
I would like a fucking break now, Universe. I think I earned one.
Sorry for blowing up, but this is all really getting to me.

try calling up the place you ordered from and explain that the package was stolen. i’ve had friends that had packages stolen from them and the company sent the item again for free. anyways, it’s worth a shot. :)

I already called Amazon and they said talk to the post office. They made it seem like there wasn’t much that they could do.

That does sound shitty, but I think the post office guy is supposed to leave a note saying that he left the package on the porch. I’m not sure about USPS, but UPS is pretty reliable about that kind of thing. I’d see if he rings again tomorrow.
If your package was stolen, try calling the company you bought it from. They might send a replacement. I don’t know how much power amazon has over stolen products since they’re pretty much the middle man, so talk with the vendor instead.

Yeah i used to live two house from you and we had to put a noticable (but not gigantic one, I didnt want people just passing by to want to come up and read it) sign on the door telling delivery people to never leave things on the porch or they will be stolen. I think it happened to me twice before I learned my lesson and made the sign.

Yeah, this is the reason I got a P.O. Box a few years ago. I didn’t get a package and some books of checks via USPS I was expecting, and my then roommates told me horror stories of having pretty much everything left on their porch stolen. There wasn’t really any proof though, so I couldn’t file a police report. However, a month or so later I found out they had sent my package return-to-sender and I got it sent again from Canada. I never got my checks and I just had them cancelled. So basically I was facing poor to-my-door delivery or theft for my packages. A P.O. Box being only $20 per 6 months didn’t seem that bad a deal for not having to deal with the hassle. Mind you, I’ve had problems with them not putting notices in my P.O. box when my packages have arrived, but all that means is I can go up to the counter and ask them to check in the back since it shouldn’t leave the post office. It’s not like it was left on some public porch. Since I got my P.O. Box about 4 years ago, I think I’ve only had 2 packages go missing (there wasn’t any tracking on either so who knows where they went).
Unless you have signature-confirmation on your packages, I think USPS will just leave it at your door. UPS and Fed Ex leave notices.
Just remember, if you get a P.O. Box, some places that ship only via UPS won’t ship to a P.O. Box. If your credit card address isn’t the same as your P.O. Box, some places won’t let it be sent to the P.O. Box if you buy with a credit card. When you apply for a mail in rebate, you often cannot use a P.O. Box since they’re trying to avoid fraud… You will need to have stuff sent to your house at some point or another.
There are a few other reasons for getting a P.O. Box other than mail theft… It’s nice to have a P.O. Box for posting your address publicly like in a minicomic or on a website (it looks rather “business-y” too). And I’ve moved about 5 or 6 times while I’ve lived in Savannah, so it’s been nice to have a stable address where mail can be delivered without interruption. I am an advocate of the P.O. Box obviously…

Huh. I worked for UPS for two seasons, so, my advice, go to the local UPS and tell em’ what happened. It’s their responsibility to make sure you got your package, unless you signed for it. Ask them where the driver put the package. If he/she put it in the front of the apt or house where you live, then he/she shouldn’t have done that. All packages must be placed at the back door, or behind a bush out of plain sight, or signed by neighbor or original addressee, meaning you.
If none of this was done, then UPS is responsible and you can be re-imbursed or you can sue. Threaten them with lawsuit but (don’t actually go through it, more expensive…)…UPS will most likely try and handle your situation as quietly as they can as they don’t want public anger against em’….
I once lost a package while on route. I had to do a whole lot of shit to make up for it bc USP won’t tolerate loss of packages.

If you don’t want to give money to the USPS (which blows) for a P.O. Box, did you know that the UPS store offers a mailbox service? Some friends of mine in Savannah use it and they love it. Much less restrictive than a P.O. Box and the service is supposed to be excellent. You could use it for just packages or for all of your mail.
I’d check it out.

Hope things turn around for ya, man.

That completely sucks, man. You have my sympathies.
My Christmas gift to you is a thousand and one prayers that 2009 is A LOT better to you than 2008 was…hope that works for ya.

I am so sorry P-ran. I wish to God that these things would stop happening :(

It sucks! In fact, I may be going through something of the same. Go to the Amazon website and track down the shipping dates/locations. Then follow through with the UPS (if they were the shipping vendor). I ordered something from Amazon at the Cape; they left it on the front stoop with no acknowledgement. That was dangerous. So, either get a PO Box or place a sign on your porch about not leaving packages. Continue to be proactive on this matter. Don’t take it; fight back by using the sytem.
