inkdick: december 10 2008 the common present
So the 2nd part of Amy’s X-mas gift came in, and didn’t get lost in the mail. So the United States Postal System is now one for one.
I got her Personal Training Cooking for the Nintendo DS, because she loves to cook and we kept seeing commercials for it on TV and she commented on how cool it looked. Well, she also got Personal Training Cooking for ME because I have recently said that I want to learn how to cook. To further add salt into the wound, the copy that she bought me arrived via UPS later in the day.
On one hand, it’s a slight bummer that we got each other the same thing. But on the other, it warms my heart and you have to admit it’s a little funny.
Later that night I tried using their recipe for fried chicken. They said it would only take 30 minutes, it ended up being 2 hours. Their recipe for the batter was too thick and we had problems with the oil. Also, Amy told me afterwards, apparently deep frying foods is not something someone should start off with when learning how to cook, as it is super difficult! But it all came out ok when I finally got the hang of it. But seriously, if you are starting out learning how to cook, wait a little while until you start deep frying foods.
The other half of Amy’s X-Mas present came for me also came in today. She got me the Admiral Ackbar Mighty Mugg, and it is fucking AWESOME! IT’S A TRAP!!!
Oh, and finally a QUESTION: Are Postal Carriers allowed to SMOKE while on duty? Because this guy was. Anyone out there know the answer? Because I would love to call in and complain if it’s against regulations or whatever. I figure a little justice for him losing my first package.

I cook for a living and even I stay way from deep frying. Unless, of course, it’s pre-battered. I messed up deep frying turkey on Thanksgiving. I basically boiled instead. It was a delicious mess.
Also, no, postal carriers aren’t allowed to smoke while delivering. Fire hazard for packages, etc. And it’s really just in bad taste.

That’s pretty mighty epic mug. Damn. You guys always come up with the best presents.

and no we (i work for the postal service…yes we are an out dated and bureaucratic institution, but it pays the bulls) are not allowed to smoke while on duty, but there are alot of people who do, and the higher ups usually just turn a blind eye to it…

I doubt he’s allowed to smoke. But you probably should learn to properly use your postman, depending on the region. In France, in many regions, the postman is someone you need or can socialize and build a relation. Some are rotten, and will be robbers, or signal others of empty homes. To prevent rotting, or to get the guy to make sure you get the mail, and prevent him from stealing it, he/she needs to be cared for, in a social way, sometimes with a little drink, or a cigarrette, a gesture.
Some places, the postman changes so often, or are so rotten or mechanical, there is no way to really influence them manually. Just got to discern.

I am so jealous that you have the Admiral Ackbar Mighty Mugg. My Bespin Luke needs another playmate.

Don’t mess with the postal person or he/she will go postal. You want that individual on your side. More things could get “lost”. Consider the fact, the he may not have been responsible for the loss of the other package. Also, the more he smokes the earlier a job opening for someone who needs a job. It all balances out. Now, I think there is much to be said for people who give each other the same gift.

Heh, well, it’s a win-win situation! :D
