inkdick: december 14 2008 fish poop
Amy and I went to Atlanta today on a whim. Three and a half hour drive each way, so doable for a day trip. We went to Coca-Cola World, The Georgia Aquarium, The Underground (which was closing when we got there), a 24 hour diner, and walked around parts of downtown at night falling in love with the city. A jam packed day. And what is the comic I choose to do for the day about? A fish pooping. To be fair, it was an epic poop. The huge fish (about four to five feet long) calmly swam up to the glass and let it all out in a cloud of poop and swam away, proud of itself. Things like this warrant a comic in my book. So a word to all you wanting me to put you in a comic someday: Poop in front of me.
On the city of Atlanta: I LOVED being in a REAL city. Yeah, Savannah calls itself a city but let’s be honest here, it’s at most a large town. Real cities have skyscrapers, different and distinct districts, art, an art scene, music, culture, things to actually do. Savannah has…trolleys.
I’m strongly considering Atlanta as a place to hang my hat for the next few years if I decide to do grad school. SCAD-Atlanta has a very good Sequential Art grad program from what I hear. So far everyone who’s been through it has graduated with a publishing deal. Not to poo-poo on SCAD Savannah’s grad program, but I’m starting to feel like the town is just getting too small. I’ve been here for more than four years. I don’t know. It’s still a little ways off to make a final decision on any of this. There’s about a million different factors I need to consider here.
But for those readers in Atlanta or readers who used to live there, where should I think about living if I decide to move there? Is it a city even worth living in or should I aim for other parts of the country?

If you are serious about Atlanta, I know people who rented places to live. It is a great city . . . don’t call it Hotlanta for nothing.

Atlanta blows. i’ve lived here too long. Possibly, I’m biased.
Go to Portland, or New york.

I’m in Atlanta now, but I just spent the last two days in Alabama, so I would say you should have called me, but we couldn’t have hung out anyway.
Atlanta is nice to visit, but I would never, ever live here. Too car-centric, terrible public transportation, and you can’t bike hardly anywhere (distance and danger!)
I have to dissent on little five points. It’s a rat’s nest absolutely overflowing with the same rude, pretentious spoiled brats that we complain about in Savannah. Bleh.

I’m so negative! It’s really a cool city, but too many things get me bent out of shape. I’m a Savannah personality.

Gotta agree with deafguy… New York is where it’s at, punk. BTW, I went into Forbidden Planet the other day and I believe they sold out of at least 3 of your books (Boxcar, Monsterology, Zack & Sara).
I also just discovered a great new store in Brooklyn that ONLY sells indie comics: http://www.desertislandbrooklyn.com/
NYC!

Is it me or does the sign above the truck in the first panel look like it’s smiling? Very cute.
