inkdick: february 09 2009 let’s get out of here
So this strange man was stalking Sabrina in her car right outside of our house. He tried hiding behind other cars and between houses. Sabrina would not leave her car until we got on the porch, and rightfully so. We told her she should have called the cops right away. Hopefully next time she will. Well, hopefully there won’t BE a next time. This fucker wandered off by the time we got out there, but still. I don’t feel safe here anymore. Well, I haven’t felt safe since I got mugged right outside the house last November, but things like this only make the fear worse. Oh, and we think our neighbor is a drug dealer, so there is that lovely detail.
Now, I know Savannah is a near shit hole and there is no place here that is 100% safe, but there has to be places in this town safer then our block. Now if we could actually find a place here that was safe(r) and actually in our price range and closer to downtown that would be great. So to my fellow Savannians, where in town should we start looking? Our lease ends at the end of April and we’re seriously considering finding a new place.
It really sucks because the house itself is nice. It’s a whole two-story house (which is a hard thing to find this side of 37th St), a block from Kroger, three from the park, I have a perfect print studio set up, have a backyard, and overall it’s a nice set up despite a few minor flaws (crappy kitchen, drafty, shit paint job, etc). But I’d rather live somewhere where I don’t have to be scared to go outside when it gets dark.
Ugh. I would just get out of this town altogether, but my life is here for the moment and odds are I’m doing grad school here. So Savannah is doable for another year and a half, I just don’t think it will be in this house.

Savannah is a very odd place to live, one block can be very clean cut and safe, like mine, which I suppose is due to the high volume of college students and old people, to just really shitty, loud, and dowright creepy, like yours, or a couple blocks over.
I’d offer up my apartment, if you guys want it when our lease is up in May, but I’m sure you guys want out alot quicker. BUt I just want you to know the offer’s up there.

Savannah makes me crazy. I can’t wait to leave this place behind.
That being said, I might miss SCAD.

What the heck, I’ll ask . . . does SCAD have housing referrals? What not go to that nice part of town, and on a super market community board place a sign stating you are looking to rent a house within that area. Hopefully, someone from that neighborhood (assuming it is a safer one) will contact you. Sort of like, networking.

I can understand the feeling here. My roommate just got mugged yesterday a few blocks over. My girlfriend has been worrying about our safety since.

You live on the 500 block of E. Waldburg, right? Well, I used to live on the 500 block of E. Hall a couple blocks away and that area is definitely one of the most ghetto neighborhoods in town. Our house was so awfull it was actually torn down after we moved out. Well anyway, the place we moved was just on the other side Price St, on the 400 block of E. Hall. It was like living in an entirely different city. Nice apartment, doctors and professors for neighbors, and I think the rent was only like $50 more per month. Also over the west side of the park has been pretty nice. Not as nice as the posher areas along Habersham St., but still no really bad spots like that stretch of blocks next to the east side projects.

I know Nikki lived just a few blocks from where you lived and they had a lot of crime issues, whereas I lived on 33rd and Abercorn and had almost none (though the apartment building across the street wasn’t so lucky).
I can’t exactly advise a safe-proof situation for getting mugged/broken into/etc. Nikki’s roommate was traveling with seven other friends when they were all held up at gunpoint by three men. So the safety in numbers thing is not exactly foolproof. Just stay aware of what’s been going on in the neighborhood. Pretty sure there’s a Savannah crimetracker somewhere online.

Chilling indeed. Freedom’s other side.
And this was much, much worse before.
Imagine the corrupt police force, all the racism…
No wonder the USSR had its appeal.
That said, I guess in terms of statistics, the crime number isn’t that high. Really depends on expectation and comparison. Judeo-christianity (or islam) and judeo-christian / warrior class (military) inspired ethical common sense seems to be the best integrating force for America.
Makes you think about the cause of criminality. Some have argued that abortion helps reduce dysfunctional families, and thus criminality. This may be linked with the Scandinavian organization of ethnic composition. The effect of education is a variable… Hmm…
Anyways, move!

My first apartment was on Bolton, on the other side of the park than Kroger. Like everywhere in Savannah, it wasn’t far from some relatively sketchy areas, but we never had any trouble. Like absolutely none. Later we heard that it was safe because of this cranky old guy who lived on our block that supposedly kept watch over the area like 24/7…
THEN of course our next house (on Broad) was broken into, had our cars broken into, not to mention bled on, and eventually collapsed. And the place after that (on Park) was alright, as long as you didn’t mind bricks being thrown at your door from time to time…but that was pretty rare.

So, I been reading your comic for the past 2 hours.
I’m not sure how I got here, I was just going to bed and then I clicked on yours
and boom! I was sucked into your talent. All I know is that I read it from beginning to end and I found it to be very awesome.
I enjoy your comic very much :)

Waldburg is nice, w/in the first 3 blocks (up to the 300 block) - there’s the new buildings at Habersham and Waldburg - don’t know if they’re for rent or not.
Basically most of SAV seemed to be nice (speaking up to last June) w/in the 300-400 block range east/west
