inkdick: february 19 2009 carrot shaped timer
So Amy’s been learning about ways to overcome procrastination in her psychology class. A week or so ago she told me that one way is to work in 30 minute blocks, taking ten minute breaks in between each block. Over time you build up how long you work. This gets your mind used to working for long periods of time without stopping.
I have a huge problem with procrastination and staying focused on my work so I figured I should give it a shot.
It actually worked. So yay. One step closer to having a good work ethic. Many more steps to go.

Listening to podcasts is a trick of mine…that way I can say, “Okay, here’s a whole solid hour (or half-hour, or hour and a half, or whatever) that I’ll work. Then I can take a break!” Keeps me focused, and wanting to hear what’s next keeps me planted at my drawing table…

I worry that it won’t work as well with a cell phone timer. I suppose I’ll have to buy one that makes a “tic tic tic” sound.

Well, I’ll give it a shot.

I found a shower right when you get up, I mean right when you get up. roll out of bed and stright into the shower gets me motavaited for the whole day. The timer thing is a good ideal maybe i will try that with my way and see if i can get some extra crap i need to get done. Amy the brains of the operation? smart cookie keep ahold of her

Nice advice. I’ll try it too.
Actually, it’s similar to what I do for my running training. Instead of doing too much at once, and never being able to continue it for weeks or months, I focus on doing bits per day, like that, I actually get shit done. Procrastination for me comes from over-expectation of the work ahead, and an over-estimation of the time ahead. Limiting the work load and/or the work time should indeed help the mind settle itself onto the path of productivity…
Once again, nice advice, thanks.
