inkdick: february 20 2009 good-bye conan

So tonight Conan O’Brien did his final show of Late Night after 16 years. This really hit me harder than I thought it would. Conan was really a huge part of my childhood. It was an almost forbidden treat to stay up super late on Friday nights and sneak downstairs to watch his show. And then in the summer I could watch him every night! His brand of comedy really had an impact on me and helped mold my sense of humor into what it is today. I owe Conan a lot for that.

I fear that now that he’ll be moving to 11:30, NBC will try to make him “safe” and “mainstream”, which is not what Conan is all about. If you want safe and mainstream, keep Leno. Oh wait. They are. At 10. But really, what we knew and loved as the Conan O’Brien show will most likely not be the show we see come June. I mean, fuck, they already got rid of the Masturbating Bear. I just hope NBC doesn’t force Conan to keep making O.J. Simpson jokes almost 20 years after they got old (seriously, fuck you, Leno).

I hope I am proven wrong and NBC lets him keep his brand of comedy and it will be like the old show. But until then, I fear this really is good-bye, Mr. O’Brien. I love you and will always remember the good ol’ years. Thank you.

A lot of people share your fear… I also hope they’ll let him do his thing… 11:30pm is pretty late too.

I’m always tempted to comment on your comics, but this one I must comment on! I didn’t watch him for 16 years (that would’ve meant I started at 5 years old) but I discovered him in middle school and stayed up late every Friday, too. Sometimes I’d even sneak back downstairs to watch it on weekdays. Conan was so FUNNY! And he stayed funny as I got older, which meant a lot in terms of his humor… so, knowing that he’ll probably be Jay Leno-ed just makes me a little sick. Yuck.

I noticed Hulu had Conan’s final episode uploaded, but couldn’t bring myself to watch it. I hopped on board when he was brought over to prime time Comedy Central for a bit, because I had a hard time staying up. The only late night show I could stomach.
