inkdick: february 21 2009 murder, murder
So I failed with this comic. Yes, it may make you laugh and/or chuckle. It may make you say things ranging from “That didn’t REALLY happen, did it?” to “Holy shit, that is amazing!” But really, I failed. Why did I fail? Because. I did not truly capture the awesomeness of this moment in comic strip form! That, and I made the Little Caesar mascot seem like a complete asshole, when in reality, the Papa John’s guy kind of had it coming.
Let me tell you the whole story…
Amy and I were eating Little Caesars in my car in the parking lot of a shopping plaza that on one end had a Little Caesars and on the other end a Papa John’s. When we parked, the Little Caesars mascot was already standing by the side of the road, waving to the rush hour traffic. Meanwhile, the staff of Papa John’s was outside their store watching Little Caesar from afar.
Little Caesar went back in to his store, and at that exact moment, Papa John’s sent out their pathetic “mascot”, and I use the word lightly. It more resembled a garbage bag painted to look like a pizza slice. It was very sad. This mascot went out and started standing in the exact same spot that the Little Caesars mascot was standing only a minute ago.
After five minutes the Little Caesars mascot came back out with some fellow employees who are rooting him on and recording this all with a camera phone. They strutted like warriors right towards the Papa John’s mascot. Amy and I joked that there is going to be a show down, but didn’t really think it was going to happen.
Little Caesar walked over to Papa John and at first acted all friendly, and then BAM. They start fighting, a fight that ends with Papa John almost getting pushed out into traffic. Immediately, Little Caesar and his pals book it back to their store while Papa John just lays on the ground. The sight of an oddly shaped Little Caesars mascot who can’t fully see out of his costume running from the scene of his own crime is something everyone should have the pleasure of seeing at least once in their lives.
After a few moments Papa John got up and walked back to his store, slumped over, defeated.
As we drove away Amy said “Murder, murder” as we tried to come up with headlines for the next day’s newspaper had this gone horribly, horribly wrong.
Now had Papa John been killed/hurt in this tussle this would be very sad. But he wasn’t, thus this was one of the funniest things I have seen in my life. Seriously, I had a fucking giggle fest while drawing the comic and am having one again typing this up.
Long story short, The Great Pizza War has been won and I will always be getting my pizza from Little Caesars until the end of time.

I could hear the theme of the “Godfather” played in the background while reading about the pizza-mascot guys going at it with each other. Where was the Pizza Hut guy? Or, at a minimum, Dominos?

i c ur point:
the writing is very descriptive… does not lend itself to just one panel: u probably need 2, however, after reading, the drawing makes that much more sense…

You guys sure do go far out to get pizza!
Must be some reason for that… Maybe I’ll try Little Caesar’s?
Anyhow, that story was great!

I think your Pop’s right; The blog entry was more entertaining than the comic in this case for me. I thought this was the funniest thing ever.

Is there any way that this is a regular thing they do for the benefit of random onlookers like yourself? Like some sort of elaborate prank where the Pizzaman gets to win one day and little Caesar the next? I mean this is just so bizarre

Dang! The pizza business is so competitive.

That’s probably the coolest thing ever. I don’t think I will ever see anything as AWESOME as that in my life.

I also found the blog entry more interesting (man, that’s something). Why not either re-draw this event in one strip, and try to convey the same substance, or do it in 2 parts?

!!!!!!!!!!
That’s totally the best story ever.
And speaking of people in costumes fighting, have you ever seen Kaiju Big Battel? It’s like WWE meets Japan meets weird costumes. When I saw them, there was one match with a lizard guy fighting someone else on a miniature model of Tokyo in a boxing ring. It was hilarious, and then the lizard guy’s pants started falling off, which somehow made it all that much more surreal.
