inkdick: march 03 2009 end of the record

It is no secret that I love vinyl records. There is just something to them. And I love when I am deep into my work, listening to a record, and the record stops. Sometimes I will let it go on, playing nothing, for a few minutes. There is something satisfying and beautiful in this. Then I get up and partake in the joy of actually turning something over with my hands.

You will never be able to get these feelings from an mp3. Click click click, there is no soul, only 0s and 1s.

Contest: What song is playing? What album? No cheating and using the internet, either.

EDIT: iamauthentic wins for correctly answering “Strange Currencies” by R.E.M.

Your comments remind me of an “Everybody Loves Raymond” episode. Frank, the dad, was upset when Raymond replaces his dad’s vinyl jazz records with CDs. Frank loved the sound of the scratchiness combined with the music from the record. Of course, being a sitcom, all records were returned to Frank and everybody loved Raymond.

Listening to records is still sweet, even in this stupid year of 2009. Kudos to you for keeping it alive. I’ve got dibs on my parents’ record player and records (ugh, mostly Joan Baez) when the time comes to it.

Man, you’re right. I never really thought of it that way, but there is something soothing in that rhythmic sound…

I cannot wait until I get to read the upcoming comic where you rant about how much you hated Watchmen. DO NOT DISAPPOINT ME PRANAS!

Yeah, I know it does murder to the needle, but sometimes that is the price you pay for something so beautiful. I try not to do it all the time. Just sometimes.

My last.fm account should give you a basic idea of the music I’m into, Sean. http://www.last.fm/user/pranman It’s not 100% accurate to my full musical tastes, but it’s close. Throw in some more old folk, blue grass, and some underground indie artists and it’s spot on.
