inkdick: march 06 2009 the cheese stands alone
So the SEQALAB podcast tonight was…well, I don’t want to say awkward. But I will say it really sucked being the only person on the show who hated the movie (see yesterday’s comic for THAT). I was sure that in a room with about ten people or more, there would be someone who thought like I did.
But yeah, this is looking to be like the whole Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 fiasco all over again. I hated both films and everyone around me, comic fan or not, loved them. I will say this though, as years went by more and more people came to my side on the issue, but it took awhile (maybe Spider-Man 3 tainted their view on the whole series, I don’t know). We are still in the minority though. Oh well.
Maybe in five years people will grow tired of the Watchmen movie (a la 300, also by Zack Snyder). Or maybe not. Whatever. After this show, I’m almost done bitching about this movie. Almost.
Brett made a good comic about this show. I think his comic about it is much more clever than mine.

Well, when it came to the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ part, I was the only no. I know James hated it, but he wasn’t on mic and didn’t say why he hated it during the show, so… ::sad face::

I still feel obligated to see this movie, although I don’t have super high hopes. I’m not one of those people who feels that source material is somehow “ruined” when adaptations aren’t done well, though, so I’m not worried. My love for Watchmen will continue no matter how well I like the movie!
I actually like Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, but 300 was atrocious, one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The only upside was that my friends and I found the whole “goat pass” scene, concept, and execution to be so hilarious that we laughed about it for hours afterwards. I read 300 shortly thereafter and I can’t honestly say I cared for the grapic novel either.

That is true, no matter hoe bad the Watchmen movie may or may not be, there will always be the greatness of the original comic.
I could never accept Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead because I love the original so much. That, and zombies DON’T run.
Yeah, boo to both 300 the movie AND the comic. I’m not a huge Frank Miller fan at all.

You know what it was missing? A Smashmouth song.

Seriously though, I think we’re so used to getting utter crap for graphic novel adaptations (especially for Alan Moore’s) that when one gets just a few things right, we rush to applaud it. I’m more disappointed in the fact that Hollywood has run my expectations into the ground so thoroughly, that I cannot help but like Watchmen.
It’s more a “nature of the beast” issue. Warner Brothers is not making Watchmen because they like Alan Moore and want to spread the story of Watchmen. They want massive returns in tickets, merchandise and Blueray sales. That’s it. So it’s a miracle that we don’t have a cast full of big name stars, a soundtrack that’s almost entirely NuMetal, a PG-13 rating and a Happy Meal tie-in.
Ultimately, though, it’s not a story that’s meant to be a movie, and I think that it shows. It’s just too expansive and too dense to be a popcorn film, let alone a film itself.
