what were your obsessions as a kid? seriously, genuinely interested. i always just get overwhelmed by how large the harry potter books are and just give up on reading them (which is weird, because i read other ginormous books without a problem)

Star Wars, comic books, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, PEZ dispensers (I am not making that one up), Hawaiian shirts, there was that year I collected fast food happy meal toys. There are probably a lot of other ones that I’m forgetting.

I only ever read one Harry Potter book, I guess in the 8th grade or something, early enough that I was still the (at least original) core target audience, but far on enough that it was already a huge, huge phenomenon. I honestly didn’t really like the book that much, but I could. not. stop. reading it. It was one of the few times in my life I actually busted out the old “reading in bed with a flashlight and a blanket over your head” thing, just so I could finish it that day.

@Ben, they only get better, especially after the second one!

Yeah, that’s what I’ve heard. My mom and sister really like them, though, so I’ve heard them reading them to each other out loud, and I wasn’t super impressed. It does seem like something I should give another chance, though, and I’m unemployed, so, hell, I ain’t busy.

For a while after listening to a bunch of the HP books on tape, I’d point at stuff I wanted and say “ACCIO!” but it never worked…

I did read Harry Potter as a kid, and did indeed become obsessed. I’m sort of just now breaking the bonds it had on me.
