ONE YEAR OF INKDICK

March 24th, 2009

So. One year ago today Sweetwater gave my Self-Publishing class the assignment to keep a journal comic for four weeks. This was either my fifth or sixth try at doing a daily journal comic, and instead of crapping out after a few days, this time actually stuck. And with that inkdick was born.

It is weird to think that I have a year of my life (minus the three weeks I didn’t do comics for in May) in comic format and online for the world to read. Moments of my life archived for a year. All the up, all the downs, all the in-betweens. My. LIFE.

I wasn’t sure I would get to this point. Some days it was such an uphill battle to get the comic done. Sometimes I’d slip and get a few days (or weeks, or months) behind. And I thought that after the first year I’d stop and move on to something else. But I want to keep on going. It is keeping me drawing everyday. It is giving me something that I’ll be able to look back on years from now and remember what life was like. I will have my own personal history.

I don’t know how much longer I’ll do this. Maybe another year. Maybe another two. Maybe I’ll be like Kochalka and do it for ten plus years. Maybe I won’t stop until I die as an old man. Who knows. But for the time being, inkdick will go on into the future until I decide to stop, if I ever do.

Thank you to all the folks who have stood behind me over the last year. Thanks to Sweetwater for getting this whole thing started in the first place and making me set up a website and opening my eyes to the possibilities of webcomics. Thanks to Amy for being my very better half and letting me put our private moments into comic form for the world to read. Thanks to all my friends who I’ve put into a comic and haven’t hated me for it. Thanks to Brett, Burkhalter, Martyn, Thomas, Birdie, A.W., Christopher, and all my other fellow journal comicers who both inspire me with their work everyday and encourage me to keep on doing what I do. Thanks to my family, even if they leave super embarrassing comments. Thanks to the crew at Seqalab. Thanks to all of you who bought an iDonate (I’m slowly getting them done, you WILL get yours, I promise). Thanks to every single one of you who read this comic, leave comments, bought one of my minicomics, share this comic with others on your blogs and forums and twitters. Thank you anyone who I might have missed. Thank you ALL! Thank you all for supporting what it is I do, thank you for actually liking what it is I do, and thank you for putting up with me and my life. You are all a huge part in me deciding to keep on doing this comic everyday. On the days when I feel like doing the comic is a chore, I think of you all and keep on drawing. I can’t say it enough, THANK YOU!

Here is to another year of my life for you all to read and another year of dick.

(And I know I’m still behind on the comics by a few days. Still playing catch up. I’ll get there, don’t you worry.)

posting schedule to get back on track

March 20th, 2009

So as happens from time to time I’ve gotten behind on posting. A mix of getting adjusted to working a real job again, finding time and energy to do comics after work, and the chaos of St. Patty’s Day weekend in Savannah. So as of this posting I’m five days behind. I like to be two to three days behind. So today and tomorrow I’m posting TWO comics up a day. One will be up around dinner time and the other one up around midnight. This should get me back on track by Sunday.

CNN

January 13th, 2009

Well, CNN ran an article about comic strips in newspapers and my mom posted a comment about comics and linked to Inkdick (her comment is the first comment under the article). It’s kind of embarrassing (ok, REALLY embarrassing) having my mom do publicity for me, but it apparently got me an assload of hits, so…I guess it worked.

I’d like to welcome all of you who came over from that link and hope you like what you see. I have over eight months worth of comics up for you to read through and I try to update with a new comic everyday. This is a journal comic, so you won’t always find punchlines and gags here, but instead I try to capture the rhythm and beats of everyday life which people seem to enjoy. So if you like what you see please keep reading or add Inkdick to your RSS reader using the ’subscribe’ button near the top of the page. And again, thanks for stopping by.

back from woodbridge, back to posting

January 5th, 2009

Well, finally back from Woodbridge and back here in Savannah where I have a proper internet connection. So I’m now able to post comics again! Gotta play catch up though, so expect anywhere from three to five strips posted up every day until I get all caught up. Thanks for bearing with me.

on the holiday season and not positng…

January 1st, 2009

As I stated in my last blog post, I may or may not be posting up comics while in Woodbridge for the holidays due to a potential lack of a scanner. WELL…there is in fact a scanner here (it’s the same one I have back at Savannah) BUT there is no internet. At least there wasn’t any internet until a few hours ago. And even now, I can’t connect to my e-mail, iChat, or upload anything onto my server. I can only surf the web.

SO…that is why there were no new comics posted up. Sorry. Not my fault. And I most likely won’t be able to post comics again until I get back to Savannah on the 2nd or 3rd. So come back January 4th and catch up on my Xmas vacation “adventures”. See you then.

holidays

December 18th, 2008

The posting schedule recently has been out of whack because I’ve been busy with getting ready to go home for the holidays and other stuff. I’m not 100% sure if I’ll be able to post up inkdicks while I’m in Woodbridge, but if I can find a scanner there I’ll be posting up once I get set up and settled. If not, well, I’ll see you next year.

But most likely I’ll be able to find a scanner. I hope.

AmyBITES

November 30th, 2008

Sorry for not being as consistant with getting caught back up on the inkdick. The joy of cooking and cleaning up after Thanksgiving dinner ate up some time. That and I had to wait until yesterday to buy a new sketchbook for the comics as the old one got filled up. But I’m getting back with it, don’t you worry.

Also, Amy started up a new blog and it is AWESOME!

It’s called AmyBITES and it’s her cooking and baking blog. She has been cooking and baking a LOT lately, so the updates have been frequent. She posts up photos and detailed recipes and instructions with every post. She also posts up some food that I make, like this yummy pumpkin bread that I made for Thanksgiving dinner. And as someone who sometimes gets to eat the food she makes, it is all SUPER YUMMY!

So if you like food and making food, this is the blog for you. Check it out, bookmark it, and leave a comment. Again, that’s AmyBITES.

trying to get back to normal

November 26th, 2008

So I’m posting again. Thanks to you all for your support and words. It’s been a rough two weeks, but I’m slowly getting back to a sense of “normal”.

I’ll post four to five strips up everyday until I’m back on track.

Thanks for understanding, guys. Tell everyone that I’m back.

Have a happy turkey day and all.

Held up at gunpoint and a break…

November 14th, 2008

Yesterday night, right outside my house, I was held at gunpoint by five to seven kids. KIDS. They looked like they were in middle and high school. They all had guns. They took my wallet (with my credit card, debit card, social security card, driver’s license, SCAD ID, and two bucks in cash and change) and my cell phone. The guy with the shot gun hit me in the back of the head two to three times with the handle of his gun.

But I’m alive. And that’s the important part. I’m trying to focus on that fact right now. Also they didn’t take the car.

I’m still shaken up, obviously. I’ve been the victim too many fucking times this quarter. The quarter began with my iMac getting stolen, and the quarter is ending with THIS shit. One week from graduation and this happens. I lived in Savannah for over four years without any incident. I lived in this house ALONE and nothing happened.

This fucking sucks. This quarter fucking sucked. And this is how I end my college career.

I’m taking a few days to maybe a week off from posting any comics. I don’t feel like drawing about what happened just yet. I need some time. I don’t know how long. It’ just too fresh for me. I’m sorry about this. I hope you understand.

And now because of this the rest of my schedule (artwork, school work, personal stuff, getting the iDonations done, etc) is getting pushed back and messed up because I have to be on the phone with people to protect my identity and credit, get new cards, new ID, talking with police AND deal with all the trauma that comes with being held up at gunpoint by five to seven kids with guns. My mind is in a horrible place right now.

I don’t know if I’m going to be ok. Not for a little while anyways. I’m sorry. This sucks.

I would like to catch a break someday…
